Copyright

A picture of the copyright symbolThe music industry and many other industries will use copyright to protect their products, ideas, lyrics and technologies. By copyrighting their products they are protecting it from being copied by any competitors in that market. In the music industry the artists name, lyrics and music video will all be copyrighted. This is too ensure that any other artists wont copy their work and make it for their own. Copyright is too also provide a certain amount of security over the song as many people now tend to illegally download their music from youtube converters or lime-wire. Copyright is to ensure the creator of something gets all of the profits that may arise from it and to be known for being the owner/creator. Copyright is extremely important as it allows the law to individualize everybody's work so he/she will credit from the work.

We had to use copyright so that the record label would allow us to use their artists song for our project. By getting permission from the record label or the artists himself we will then be allowed full use of the song for our project.

When we found the artists that we wanted to do we had to  find some sort of details for that artist so we could request copyright permission. I used the internet to search about Jason Mraz to find some details. I couldn't find any personal details for jason Mraz although i found out the contact details to his record label. You usually wont be able to speak to the artist himself so you should go through his  record label to get permission. I then E-Mailed the record label requesting the use of jason Mraz's song 'I Wont Give Up'.

I didn't get a response from the record label. I believe this partly is as the record label is based in the USA and are not familiar with the U.K's school curriculum so didn't think that it was adequate for them to allow us copyright of the song.

Pie charts/Bar charts (Questionnaire results)

In this part of our research we had to decide how we wanted to present our results from the questionnaire. we wanted them to be shown in a clear and easy way. Thats why we decided to use pie charts. They are simple to use and are very easy to read the information displayed on them.

We decided to create pie charts because it is a simple and smart way of displaying each questions results. We used Microsoft excel to make all of our pie charts. We also decided to use pie charts as it is simple to read the information displayed on them.

This is our pie charts and shows all of the results that we gathered from our questionnaires. the results give us a clearer perspective on what people like and what they listen to. It has also started to give us a clearer view on what type of music genre that we want to do for our own music video.

Questionnaires

Questionnaires are a key part of our research before developing our own music video. Questionnaires are very important when it comes to determining the target audience we want to reach. The questionnaire will allow us to see what our viewers want. Once all of our results have been gathered we can now take into consideration the views and opinions of the public to what they like in music. This should steer our research into finding the correct song that our viewers will want to see.

One of our questions  was 'What is your favorite music genre?' We used this question in our questionnaire to gain a better idea of what music genre was popular. Our results concluded that more people out of 40 listened to 'Alternative'.

1.     Are you Male of Female?                                                                      Male/Female
2.     How old are you?                                                                              <16 /17-35/35+
3.     What is your favorite genre?                                                          ..……………………..
4.     How often do you listen to music per week?                                >3/4-12/13+
5.     Do you like new releases? (Top ten chart)                                            Yes/No
6.     Which do you prefer in a music video?           Performance/Concept/Narrative
7.     What tempo do you look for in a music video?                                  Slow/Fast
8.     Do you like seeing the artist in the video?                                    Absent/Present
9.     Do you like seeing the artist’s lifestyle?                                                  Yes/No
1. Do you like seeing C.G.I in the video?                                                       Yes/No
1. What emotion do you like the artist to convey? .                           .……………………..
1. Please Circle your favorite song from this list?
                                                                                            Jason Mraz-I won’t give up
                                                                                              Chase and Status- End credits
Calvin Harris- We’ll be coming back
                                                                                              Drake-Over

In our questionnaires we surveeyd 40 people. As their is 4 members in our group we chose to divide the work load. We each then had ten questionnaires each to give out for feedback. We did this as it would be much easier and get the results a lot quicker due to the small amount of questionnaires we had each. We surveyed 40 people because this would give us back strong and reliable results.

Do you think music videos should be censored?

In Eamons version of 'Fuck You Right Back' their is offensive language throughout the song. One of the lyrics is 'Fuck You Ho I Don't Want You Back'  This is offensive language and should be censored determining on what music channel it will be shown on. If its a channel like kiss, they are very cautious with what they air on their channel. They have a very broad target audience and wouldn't want to upset their loyal fans with taboo language in songs. The rap artist Tyga has a song called lap dance which has explicit material and offensive language. One of the lyrics is 'ass so fat i need a lap dance' This taboo language would of been banned by OFCOM as it will be seen as extremely offensive taboo language by the public. Its OFCOM job to control the use of taboo language and explicit material in songs so they would of have to censor this lyric.
Censorship is a law which has been put in place to control what is seen and heard in the media. Censorship is to suppress taboo language and explicit material that may be found as offensive to the viewer. Media related companies like MTV and 4 Music will decide what they want to censor or not when showing certain music videos. Different music channels and music videos may or may not censor the video. This is due to what their target audience like and whether it is suitable for the viewer. OFCOM stands for the office of communications. OFCOM are responsible for representing the audiences views and therefore censoring what may be seen as offensive or explicit material.

Specific artists in the music industry don't care about censorship and believe that music is just entertainment and should be seen as freedom of speech so OFCOM shouldn't be allowed to censor with their work. In Rihanna music video for 'we found love' their is explicit material shown throughout. The music video displays drugs, alcohol, sex, fighting and rebellious behavior. This behavior in the music video will cause a problem for OFCOM as it is extremely inappropriate to the young viewer.

In the Eminem debate we discused all the different point of views that the artist, record label, fans, parents and music channels. Eminem argues that his lyrics and visuals in music videos shouldnt be censored. He believes in freedom of speech and wants to express his emotions and his past experiences through his lyrics and visuals. Eminem uses offensice language to show his audience his emotions and to try build a stronger relationship with his fans.

As Shady Records is owned by Eminem they have full backing of Eminems choice of lyrics and visuals in his music videos. The label will always be happy with its main artist and owner as long as it continues to be an extremely profitable label.

Eminem is loved by his fans all over the world being the best rapper of all time. eminem never instructs children to start committing crime or do anything illegal. Eminems songs are about him and his past experiences. Eminems songs actually set an example for children telling then that you may go through a rough time but you can come out of it and be as successful as he is. This is sending the children a positive representation of the artist. However if a child got his ideas for criminal activity from an eminem song than obviously that is due to the way the child has been brought up or just is 'crazy' which eminem said in an interview about censorship.

MTV, Radio one and kiss 100 wont play any of eminems songs from the start of his career. Them songs have way too explicit material and very offensive taboo language. Also because these stations broadcast for a mass market audience, in which eminem may not fit the needs to the everyday viewer. Eminem wont be played on these stations either because of the easy access younger viewers have to the channels. The themes of death and violence especially put off these channels from playing his music.

In my personal opinion i believe that censorship shouldn't exist. I believe that artists should be free to express themselves how they like whether its through their lyrics or through the visuals in their music videos. If parents don't agree with their children listening and watching their music then they should do more about it. They should try to control what they watch or at-least trust their children to not be influenced by the visuals and lyrics. The record label for the artists song do what they want and whether the song gets censored or not its out of their hands however Eminem is allowed to put what he wants in his song as he own his own record label 'Shady Records'. To conclude censorship does have its benefits but in the overall the lyrics are just freedom of speech and the visuals from the music videos display nothing that you wont see on television.

Analysis Of A Star

Chris Brown-Whose girl is that

Music videos are a tool, which are used to promote the artists they are also used to create a stronger relationship between the artist and the audience. Chris browns first ever music video was filmed when he was only 13 years old. The genre of the music video is RnB. The RnB music video is mainly performance based and always uses close up shots of the artist. This is because he is new to the music industry and they want the artist to build a strong relationship with the audience.

As the artist at the time is only 13 he wasn’t represented as the rich and flashy person like over RnB artists Hip Hop artists.  This was because the artist was young and not recognised in the music industry so they didn’t want the audience to get the wrong perspective about the artist. However the music video gives the artist a very strong image of being very talented young artist. This positive representation of the artist gives him a good image, which helped him greatly when entering the music industry.

In this music video Chris Brown is wearing a long baggy top with basketball shorts. This outfit conforms to the broad american audience of teenagers. This sepecific target audience allowed the record label to mould Chris Brown into the star that they need to fill the gap in the market. This conforms to Richard Dyers star theory as he stated that all artists are not real people they are media products. As chris brown doesn't write his own songs, choose his costumes or direct his music videos. This shows how he is only a media product who is told how to act and perform.

Chris Brown-Yeah 3x

Half way through Chris browns career as an RnB artist he started to record more up beat songs straying away from his usual love stricken RnB songs. Chris Brown music video for ‘yeah 3x” is mainly performance based and has consistent close up shots of the artist. The consistent close up shots of the artist is too keep the continuous strong relationship between himself the artist and the fans.

The artist’s image has also greatly changed. As fashion trends have changed over the years his style has become more free and stylish then since his first music video. In this music video he has started to wear clothes like a shirt, tie and waistcoat. In the music video he wears loads of different outfits to cater for different target audience.

After a series of bad publicity Chris Brown felt like he had to reinvent himself. This is one of the reasons to why Chris Brown changed from the slow love stricken RnB songs to the more upbeat and dance songs. The constant change in the music industry trends may have also fuelled Chris Browns sudden change in music genre.

Chris Brown-Don’t Judge Me

Chris Brown has had a very successful career in the music industry. The first shot is a low angle long shot looking up at the artist walking along a dusty road. This opening shot is too tell the audience that the music video is narrative based. The first shot is too also connote how the artist is going on a journey. The artists image in this music video is fit to based the narrative of the song. Although you do recognise changes in the fashion trends that the artist has previously followed.

The artist conveys a very strong image. The artist has an overall positive representation therefore bringing him closer to his audience. This is shown through the song lyrics of saving peoples life’s.

Throughout the years Chris Brown has changed a lot. His style in fashion trends changed a lot over the years wearing many different costumes in a lot of his music video each one portraying a new style. His music has also slightly changing as chris brown is also doing a lot of rapping in his songs.

Analysis Of Different Music Genres

Drake-Over (Rap)

A Music video has many different purposes. The purposes of a music video consist of things like promoting the artist, to buy into the artists lifestyle and to build a relationship with the artist. Drake is a rap artist

Drakes music video 'over' is a rap music video, conveys different conventions and theorys like goodwin and dyer. The video starts with a close up shot of him sitting on the bed looking directly into the camera. This is to emphasise the emotion within the artist and to try establish a relationship between the artist and the audience. In this opening shot the artist is only wearing a white top with a white tracksuit top. This conveys the fact that he didnt come from a rich background and had to work to get where he is. How ever he is only wearing a small thin chain which brakes the normal conventions of a rap artist. The small chain is to show that this is the song that will make him a renowned rap artist so he doesnt wanna show his succes through big chains as he hasnt established himself as the rich and flashy rap artist.

Throughout the music video the pace of the editing changes to the pace of the music. The start of the music video has slow paced editing. This is too emphasise the emotion that the artist is portraying. The music then gets quicker and so does the rapping. The pace of the editing then also increases, which is typical for a rap song. Their is cgi graphics in the music video. The cgi graphics is of lights going over the artist which is trying to connote how he has travelled everywhere which relates to his lyrics in the song. This relationship between the music and the lyrics follows another theory by Andrew Goodwin.

Throughout the music video their is different lighting. At the start of the music video the lighting is quite dull. This it too emphasise the artists emotions of going through a rough patch in his life and career. Mise en scene was widely used in this music video. The setting was constantly changing throughout the video to show how he has been everywhere which his lyrics state.

Flo-Rida-Club Cant Even Handle Me Right Now (Dance)

The opening shot is of two very expensive cars. Flo Rida then steps out of one of the cars. When he gets out of the car he throws a load of money into the air. This is too show his wealth and to show how cool he is. This is done to promote his lifestyle to the audience and for the audience to be more interested in the music video. Around the cars outside the club is loads of people. This is to show that the club is a popular place to visit and is trying to show the audience that its gonna have lots of energy and enthuasim in the video.

Flo-Rida music video is performance based which is common for dance music videos. Their is a lot of close ups of the artist throughout the music video. This is so the artist can build a better relationship with his fans. The use of close ups was too also show how happy he is. This is key as it is a dance genre so the fans need to see the artist himself enjoying himself. The editing is fast paced throughout the music video. The fast paced editing is used as the song is fast and upbeat.

The music video has quite low key lighting. This is because they are in a club and is usually quite dull in a club but with loads of lights and lasers. The lighting make it more exciting for the audience as they will want to be there with the artist. The mise en scene is very typical of a dance video. The setting doesn't really change apart from different clips taken from the film step up. The setting doesnt change as the song is about a club.

When the artist steps out of the car he is wearing a big red leather jacket and a big gold chain around his neck with a medallion on. The loud and expensive clothes follow the stereotypes of a wealthy and successful artist. The expensive clothes is also there to try and sell the artists life style to the audience. The big gold chain is too emphasise his wealth and is trying to show off to the audience to gain a better artist image.

Maverick Sabre-Let Me Go (Indie)

Maverick Sabres music video 'let me go' is a narrative based music video. The artist is not apart of the story he is just simply telling the story himself through his lyrics. Throughout the music video the artist is there but has no actual action in the narrative. The opening shot is a low angle mid shot of a man laying on dirt. This first shot tells the audience that the man shown is some how gonna get hurt during the music video. This draws the audience attention therefore making them more interested in the narrative.

At the start of the music video there is fast paced editing which links in to the beat in the music. The fast paced editing is jump cutting between different shots. Some of the shots are establishing shots telling the audience that the music video is set in Las Vegas and the other shots are of the artist and nice cars. The jump cut shots of the artist is to build a relationship between the audience and the artist. it is too also show the audience who the artist actually is.

The setting of the music video is in Las Vegas. The choice of Las Vegas is because its glamorous and fun but things can go wrong. The setting also tells the audience that gambling, drinking and violence was probably gonna be involved. The artist clothing was very casual but smart. He didn't dress up to look cool and wealthy. He was dressed down less than the main man inn the narrative. This is to take partial focus off the artist to keep the narrative the main focus of the song. Throughout the music video it was mainly high key lighting due to all the lights in Las Vegas and to keep the music video clear for the narrative.
