Risk Assesment

It is important to consider risk factors before i started filming the music video. We would need to do this so if something did happen we will be able to sort the situation out quickly and continue filming. The weather is an important risk factor. As the equipment we have isn't completely professional they wont be able to with stand rain or poor weather so the weather is a key risk to our filming as it may impact the whole shot. It also key as it will allow all the people involved with filming to be more aware of the risks that surround filming.

The risk assessment will help me during filming as it will ensure the safety of the crew and cast. Before filming everyone involved will be informed of the risk assessment and gave a detailed explanation of the possible dangers that may occur when filming. As certain parts of filming will be done on busy roads it is key to inform the cast and crew of all the potential hazards that occur on the road. This will help them prevent themselves from getting hurt or breaking any of the filming equipment. As parts of the music video will be filmed in low key lighting visibility may become scarce. This is another risk as the cast and crew wont be able to see all the potential hazards during filming .

What is a music video?

The purpose of a music video is too create a more visually active version of the song to attract a bigger audience. A music video will keep the song fresh in the audience head as they will remember the visuals shown within the music video. Secondly, a music video will give the audience a better perspective of the artist seeing his/her lifestyle and way of living. The use of a music video will also convey the lyrics and the meaning behind the video so much clearer to the audience giving them a better understanding and better enjoyment when watching the video. A music video is a key tool to promoting the artist. In a music video the artist will show his lifestyle, wealth and success in the videos. This is too convey his lifestyle to the audience making them want he artist way of living. To finish off the artists record label will produce the video and market it to the appropriate target audience.

A music video follows three different conventions. A music video will either have a narrative which means the music video will display some sort of story which is based along the lyrics. Performance based music videos usually follow dance and alternative pop sub genres. This convention of a music video usually displays large amounts of dancing as the song is best conveyed through a performance based video. The final convention is concept based music video. A concept based music video is when the artist is trying to convey a certain message top the audience.

Wiz Khalifa

Their are four micro elements that are used to make a succesful conventional music video. These four elemens are Mise-En-Scene, lighting, editing styles and camera shots. Using these four elements the director of the music video can portray all of the themes of the song and also promote the artist at the same time like the rap artist Wiz Khalifa would only portray his wealth and social status. This will build a bigger relationship between himself and his target audience.

Kanye West - All Of The Lights ft Rihanna, Kid Cudi

Kanye West and Kid Cudi are both rap artists within the music industry whereas Rihanna is a pop artist. However due to the large amount of mainstream artists these two music genre together in a song has become more and more common and is gaining more popularity with the average consistent viewer. The different codes and conventions of these artists will be conveyed through Mise en scene and the 4 different micro elements.

The opening shots to this music video are in black and white to convey to the audience that this part of the music videos narrative is set in the past. It then cuts to a shot of a little girl walking out of a block of flats. The shot then jump cuts to a series of tracking shots of the little girl walking around the street. The streets are covered in snow and the shot looks very dull. This connotes how it is a cold and dark time for the little girl and that she may be struggling with something. However the girls costume conveys a different idea. She is well clothed and has lots of warm cloths on too cater for the bad weather. This tells the audience that she is well looked after but opens up the question of who is looking after her.

As the music video continues the tempo of the music starts to get faster. The tempo gets faster really quick and then you start to hear the first of the lyrics. In this part of the song every lyric that is heard is shown in the visuals in big bold colourful writing like disco lighting. This conforms to Goodwins theory of having a relationship with the lyrics and the visuals as every lyric was being shown in the shot when it was said by the artists Rihanna. This part of the music video is bright and colourful which will appeal to thew target audience more as they are at that age were they start going out and start to enjoy more of the club scene. When the first set of visuals are shown the main artists kanye west is shown standing in the middle of the alleyway. This part of the music video also conforms to goodwins theory as kanye west displays a relationship between the lyrics and visuals by holding his head.

Knaye West is well renowned mainstream rap artist. Due to his high popularity and public awareness he conforms to richard dyers star theory. n all of his music videos he is clothed by his record label and told how to act and behave. Although Kanye west is a talented rap artist he lacks any originality due to the strong impact of his record label and what his target audience want to see. Throughout the music video their flashing lights everywhere. This is too match up with the song name and become more clear to the audience that tall of the lights is trying to convey from their fame as they are always in the spotlight.

Generic conventions:

Girl band - Spice Girls
Rock - Nirvana
R'n'B - Neyo
Boy Band - One Direction
Pop - Lady GaGa
Rap - Lil Wayne
Grime - Dizzee Rascal
Garage - Craig David

Shooting Plan

Before shooting our music video we chose to conduct a shooting plan with a shooting schedule on. This was too construct our filming in a more time efficient way so that we wasn't spending too much time filming when we should be editing the footage. The shooting plan gave us a clear instruction of when and where we was shooting and at what times.

This greatly helped the efficiency of our filming as it made the group more punctual and made us a lot more organized. When filming the shooting plan helped us be at the correct location with the correct costumes for that part of filming every time we planned to film. This allowed us to be more time efficient when filming and allowed to change certain parts of the filming as we believed certain aspects of the music video may need to be changed.

We tended to make a few changes to the shooting plan. Especially when it came to the costume that was going to be worn at that specific location. We thought that in the different locations the colours of the costume would best be conveyed to the audience in the location. This is due to atmosphere of that location as it may be busy in the location would convey different ideas to the audience.

Planning Artists Image

Jason Mraz
To the left is two very popular alternative pop music genre artists. The costumes that they are wearing are the general clothes that this type of artist wears. Our artist in our music video is going to be wearing similar clothing to these artists. Planning of the artists image is a key aspect of our research as it will help us choose a costume that will describe the emotion of our artists lyrics. The clothing that the artist wears will be typical to the music sub genre because without without this Mise-en-scene will not match the style of filming production and could cause major problems with the effectiveness of the music video.

The main item of clothing that is going to be constantly used throughout the music video is a black or white plain t-shirt. The plain black or white t-shirt is too connote the artists originality.
However just having a plain white or black t-shirt as the main upper part of the artist costume will not be best when trying to convey the emotion behind the lyrics and visuals we will display in our music video.

To make the emotion more apparent to the audience we are going to use a red jumper over the plain t-shirt. As the jumper is red it should convey feelings of love hate and anger. These three main connotations of love will give the audience the choice of whether deciding if my music video is about love, sadness and anger. This should make the audience more intrigued in our music video.

Our artists is going to wear skinny jeans or chinos. Chinos originated from the alternative pop music genre but had developed and grown into a more popular type of clothing becoming much more mainstream. But as it still originated from alternative pop it is still seen as an original type of clothing. This is conventional to our music sub genre as it will connote the originality of the item of clothing.

The footwear is key when trying to connote a certain emotion or mood within the music video. We are going to use bage high top trainers as our artists foot wear. The bage willhelp convey the originaity of the artist and also convey how he differs from the mainstream music. This is what we are trying to convey in our music video so this will be the best colour to use to try and convey this feeling to the audience.

Ed Sheeran

A key piece of clothing that is going to be used in a scene of the music video is a long sleeve blue and white striped polo. In the scene i want the artist to do simple hand actions which will ctrongly convey the artists emotions to the audience. The blue and white stripy polo will help convey these emotions further. As the audience will relate the colour blue to sadness and hope.

Film Schedule

why is a film schedule important to have?

A film schedule is key when trying to film your own music video. A film schedule allows all the cast and camera crew to be at the filming location at the same time. This will allow a more efficient way of filming as everyone involved in the filming qwill be at the location at the same time. A film schedule is important to have as it also will give the cast an idea of what costume they should wear in this part of the filming.

Did you follow the schedule while filming or did you make any changes?

When it came to the location we mainly did follow the film schedule. We tended to adjust the location slightly as we thought the shot would be better elsewhere but was still in that same area of london still displaying the same landmarks. We also changded the costume a lot straying away from what we initially wanted to wear.

Vox pops interviews

Our group decided to undertake this as a part of our research to extend the detail of our results. By getting peoples opinions on camera to our questionnaire makes our research much more reliable. People due to tick any random box when doing a questionnaire on paper but as we was filming them they answered the questions properly. Doing these interviews also helps us when deciding the genre of our music video. The results that we gathered will give us a clearer perspective onto what the public like in a music video.

The interviews went very well and gave us a much clearer view to what the public look for in a music video. We gathered lots of information which is key to creating our music video and a key aspect into what music genre we wanted to lean towards. In our results from the interview we gathered results that show us what genre we want to use and what conventions we need to consider.

We will be able to use this research a lot when it comes the planning of my own music video. Using the results that we got from the vox pops interviews i now have a clearer perspective into what and how i am going to convey the common conventions and themes of my chosen music genre.

Photo-shoot

As a group we decided to conduct a photo-shoot of our artist as most alternative pop artists tend to be present on the album or magazine cover. This gave us the means to be able to make a professional and realistic digipak and magazine advert for our artist. Our artist will need to be present to also show the audience who the artist is and too also try and build a bigger and better relationship between the artist and the audience.

Finally, this helped our group create a certain
portfolio of the artist and allowed to us to become
more creative with our ideas and the way in which we used the artist. We tried to use a simple background during the photo-shoot to make the processing and use of the photo easier as we would have to cut the artists head out of the background.

Research into chosen music genre

When researching into the music genre we wanted to use we had mixed opinions and views. Our group all like different music genres but all had similar interests in one music genre. We all agreed that alternative best fit our interests into music and thought that an alternative music video usually conveys the concept that we want to convey in our music video.

The two different alternative music artists that im going to write about is Ed Sheeran and Maverick Sabre. The Ed Sheeran music video that i am going to analyze is 'The A Team'.  The A Team was sung and written by the artist him self. The song was very successful across Europe's music industry being a top ten hit in ireland, germany and the UK. The A Team is a narrative music video and doesn't have the artists as the main attraction in the video. The music video conflicts with the usual stereotype of an alternative artist as the music video doesn't tell the audience who the artist is. As Ed Sheeran is a widely popular mainstream alternative artist he will have a very broad target audience. People aged between 15-40 will be his target audience for a song like this.

The narrative is about a homeless girl and all the struggles that she is going through. Their is a strong message in the music video which the artists is trying to convey. The artists is trying to convey this by relating all the visuals with his lyrics. This makes it so much clearer for the audience to understand whats he saying and what he means. Goodwins theory of relationship between lyrics and visuals is present throughout the music video. Goodwins theory is shown when he said "And with a pipe she flys to the motherland" And the visuals in the music video s her with a crack pipe trying to get high and get away from the hell that she lives everyday. The pace of the editing is slow to fit in  with the pace of the music. The slow paced editing is too also emphasize the emotions of the young girl in the music video.

The Mise-en-scene in a music video like this is a key element. Every micro element needs to be perfect to make the story look realistic and to give the audience the sense of sympathy for the girl that the artists is trying to create. The artists is trying to create a broader awareness of these homeless people and what they actually go through. The Mise-en-scene plays a big part in this as people will feel more sympathy when actually seeing the girl. The opening shot of the music video is of the girl sleeping on the bench in a park. The camera is using a black and white effect to convey how she is going through a dark time.
The girl in the video is wearing small old shorts a big hooded jumper and is walking around with a sleeping bag wrapped around her. This conveys hows she is a homeless person and going through a rough time. In the music video the setting is changing constantly. Every location that she goes too it is really dull and grey. This is too convey the sadness and emotion in the song. The lighting is very low key to fit in with the narrative of being homeless and alone. The low key lighting is also to fit in with the setting like when she was standing in the pitch black car park at night.

The hair and make up of the character in the music video also connotes her feelings. The running mascara down her face shows the audience that she is sad and has been crying. She is also sitting on the street selling the big issue which indicates her status in society. She then lowers herself to prostitution. This is connoted through her costume. She is wearing netted tights and a small skimpy vest displaying her cleavage. This implicates the needs for survival as she has turns to prostitution to earn some money.

Maverick Sabre-Let Me Go

Maverick Sabre is a popular artist catering for the target audience of alternative music genre. he has broad commercial appeal due to the lifestyle he appeals in his music videos and the conventions behind his lyrics.

The opening shots in the music video are fast pace cuts between different landmarks in las vegas. This is to give the audience a clearer view of what las vegas is like if the viewer doesn't know and also gives the audience a clearer view to what is going to happen in the music video. The artist is wearing a shirt with a pair of baige chinos. This contrasts with the artists music genre as alternative music genre is based around originality whereas the artists clothing is more mainstream and would fit an artist like Justin Bieber better of the pop music genre.

In the music video the artist himself is not the main character in the narrative behind the lyrics. The man shown next to him driving the car is the person who is playing the main character in the narrative. This music video does follow goodwins theory with a relationship between the visuals and lyrics. The lyrics are describing the narrative of the song and the visuals. The lighting changes throughout the music video. As they are in las vegas and they tend to use high key lighting which is used to bring the colour out of all the lights in las vegas. The clip also jump cuts to scenes of only the artist in a desert. This uses natural high key lighting as he is outside and standing in a desert.

Magazine reflection

Magazine Draft 1
I do think that my two magazine advert drafts are
conventional to the music genre. I belive that the first one doesnt follow as many conventions as my second draft. In the first one i think the target audience may be able to build a styronger relationship with the artist due to the use of the intrument. Alternative pop is very instrument related and having the cello in the background may make the audience relate to it more. On the second one i thuink the target audience will be able to trelate to the artist as you can see the whole artists face and the artist is pulling a happy expression. This may help build a stronger bond between the artist and the audience.

On magazine draft 1 i decided to put the image of he artist at the bottom and use the cello as the background. The artist at the bottom, looking down is trying to connote to the audience how serious the artist is about his music. I decided to do a black and white bckground to try and convey the originality and rarity of alternative pop music. I chose to put the artists name and record label in red to make it stand out more to the reader and to also connote that these are the most important pieces of information.
I would change the typoghraphy as i think it isnt conventional to my music genre and makes the advert look less professional.

This drfat will help me with my second as it has showed me what typography does and doesnt look good. It also gave me a clearer perspective on how i would want my second one to look.

Planning, Lighting and Colour

Lighting and colour is a key aspect when creating your own alternative music genre music video. The lighting can allow the artist to set a certain a mood in the video. Bright high key lighting tends to convey a fun and happy place whereas low key lighting tends to have a negative representation usually being sad and anger. Using the correct lighting will allow us to give the audience a clearer perspective on what mood our song is as it can be a happy song or a sad song. We are going to use a key lighrting as our chosen song conveys themes of hope and not giving up which is a positive representation which we will convey through our lighting.

High key lighting is conventional to my music genre as alternative pop usually contains fun and clever songs which constantly have the use of guitars in. High key lighting is also key as a lot of alternative pop videos are shot in in sunny exotic locations like jason mraz song 'Lucky' being filmed in a beach.

The main colour connotations displayed when creating a conventional alternative pop music video depend on the emotion conveyd through the music videos visuals and lyrics. The colour blue is used to represent the fun and happy side of the lyrics and visuals. when the sky is clear and blue this will convey this emotion more fluently. The colour red usually connotes anger and sadnes or even love. We will use this colour to try and connote the less happy emotions behind the lyrics.

Throughout the music video the artist will be wearing a series of different costumes. Each costumes colour will convey a different emotion or maybe the same emotion. Each one will connect the lyrics to the visuals for the audience.
